Workforce and Schedule Management Glossary
Discover definitions of technical terms for human resource management, operations research, and work schedule creation.
- Metaheuristic Algorithm
- A mathematical method for solving complex problems, such as schedule generation. It intelligently explores a large number of solutions. Unlike traditional methods that are very slow, these algorithms find an excellent solution in seconds to generate the work schedule.
- Daily Span
- The total time between the start and end of an employee's workday, including breaks. Labor law imposes strict limits (often a maximum of 13 hours) to protect employee health.
- Hard Constraint
- In scheduling software, this is an absolute rule. It often involves labor law (mandatory rest periods, maximum hours) or safety regulations. If this rule is not respected, the work schedule is invalid.
- Soft Constraint
- A rule or preference that the software tries to accommodate as much as possible. It can be bypassed to improve the overall schedule. These often involve leave requests or schedule fairness. Each constraint has a weight that guides the artificial intelligence.
- Night reception and audit
- In the hospitality industry, this is the work of the night auditor. They verify payments, close registers, and prepare for the next day's arrivals. Scheduling for this position is challenging because night work is strictly regulated by law.
- Prime cost
- The most important financial metric in the restaurant industry. It is the combination of food costs and labor costs. Optimizing the work schedule reduces employee costs by avoiding overstaffing.
- Operations Research
- A mathematical science that uses algorithms to make the best decisions when faced with complex problems. It is the technology used in logistics and to automatically generate employee work schedules.
- Shift work and rotations
- A continuous work arrangement, often found in manufacturing or healthcare. The 24-hour day is divided into several shifts (Morning, Afternoon, Night). Teams rotate across these periods to ensure continuous operation.
- Overall Equipment Effectiveness
- A key performance indicator in manufacturing that measures actual machine utilization. Poor staff scheduling (such as the absence of a qualified operator) halts the machine, leading to significant financial losses.
