Metaheuristic Algorithm
A mathematical optimization method designed to solve complex problems (such as schedule creation) by intelligently exploring a vast number of possible solutions. Unlike exact methods that can take years to compute, metaheuristics (such as Simulated Annealing or Variable Neighborhood Search) find an excellent, or even optimal, solution in seconds.
Daily Shift Span
The total time elapsed between when an employee first starts work in the day and when they leave permanently, including breaks and split shifts. Labor law imposes strict limits on this daily span (often a maximum of 13 hours in France) to protect workers' health.
Hard Constraint
In optimization software, this is an absolute rule that can never be violated under any circumstances. These typically include labor laws (minimum rest times, maximum hours) or safety requirements (mandatory presence of a first aider). If a hard constraint cannot be met, the schedule is considered invalid.
Soft Constraint
A rule or preference that the algorithm will try to satisfy as much as possible, but which can be violated if doing so improves the overall schedule. These often include employee leave requests or fair weekend distribution. Each soft constraint has a "weight" (importance) that guides the artificial intelligence's decisions.
Erlang C
A mathematical formula widely used in call centers to calculate the exact number of agents needed at a given time. It takes into account expected call volume, Average Handling Time (AHT), and service level targets (e.g., 80% of calls answered in under 20 seconds).
Night Audit
In the hospitality industry, this is the procedure carried out by the night auditor to verify the day's transactions, close out cash registers, and prepare for the next day's arrivals. Scheduling this shift is complex because it involves night work strictly regulated by law.
Prime Cost
The most important profitability metric in the restaurant industry. It is the sum of raw material costs (Food & Beverage Cost) and labor costs (Labor Cost). Schedule optimization directly aims to reduce the "Labor Cost" component of Prime Cost by preventing overstaffing.
Operations Research (OR)
A discipline of applied mathematics that uses modeling, statistical analysis, and algorithmic optimization to make the best possible decisions in the face of complex problems. It is the science behind logistics, flight routing, and automated schedule generation.
3x8 / 5x8 Shift Pattern
A continuous work schedule pattern (often in manufacturing or healthcare) where 24-hour days are divided into three 8-hour shifts (Morning, Afternoon, Night). Teams rotate through these shifts according to a predefined cycle (the rostering sequence) to ensure uninterrupted production or service.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
A key performance indicator in manufacturing that measures the effective utilization rate of machinery. Poor scheduling (such as the absence of a qualified operator causing a line shutdown) immediately drops the OEE, leading to heavy financial losses.
Workforce Management (WFM)
The set of processes and technologies used to optimize employee productivity. WFM encompasses demand forecasting, schedule planning (rostering), time and attendance management, and real-time performance analytics.
